For approximately the next 5 classes we are going to be working on our travel writing assignment. We are using class time to develop our ideas and project. Please see the project page for more resources and ideas.
Sept 26, 2019Today in class we did a 'Thinking Classrooms' activity. We reviewed many different examples of non-fiction travel brochures, blogs, and advertisements. In small groups you answered questions on each of the brochures. This activity was in preparation for you final assignment for the non-fiction unit.

Sept 24, 2019
Today we spent a period discussing how to formulate topic sentences for paragraphs. We analyzed other pieces of writing to decipher the topic sentence, and then generated your own examples of topic sentences. We concluded our class by reading a new article titled A Report From Space and answering several questions related to the topic. Finally, with our additional minutes in class, we did a free write "A day in a pair of shoes..."

Sept 20, 2019Today we completed our "Overtourism" assignment. We listened to two chapters of our audio book. Finally, we completed a short worksheet on joining simple sentences using FANBOYS. FANBOYS are joining words (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so).

Sept 18, 2019Today in class we discussed the problems with Overtourism. We considered several different statements on the topic of tourism to begin class. We then read the article Too Many People Want to Travel. Finally, you were responsible for completing a response question.

Sept 13, 2019
Today in class we completed the Into Thin Air assignment. It was due at the end of class unless you have already spoken to me about handing it in on Wednesday. We listened to two chapters of Refugee. On Wednesday we will be discussing the concept of "Overtourism" and looking at some different perspectives on the topic.

Sept 12, 2019Today in class we brainstormed what our perfect holiday or trip would look like. We accompanied that brainstorm with an article Into Thin Air. Once you have completed the reading we are going to answer two questions.

Sept 10, 2019Today in our double block we completed the first CAT 4 exam. We also started our audio book Refugee by Alan Gratz. We listened to the first two chapters of the book and were introduced to Joseph and Isabel. If you were finished the exam early we read a short Globe and Mail article about travelling.

Sept 6, 2019
In class today we created a short flowchart to distinguish the different forms of non-fiction text. We also brainstormed examples and features of non-fiction text that we know already. Finally, we read a short news article about the benefits and drawbacks of private schools.
- On Monday we will be doing the CAT 4 exam. Please remember a pencil for this exam.
